The Mughal and Portuguese empires were both created by going out and conquering area. However, the Portuguese set out in order to trade and spread religion while the Mughals were all Islamic and were not seen as the sort of trading empire that the Portuguese were. - Robert

The Portugese and Mughal empires both acquired profit from conquering, although the Portugese sought to establish a trading empire and spread Christianity while the Mughals dominated the Indian subcontinent and were inferior in the trading world. -Emily

MUGHAL EMPIRE:

The Mughal Empire reigned during the same time as the Ottoman Emipre, and at it's time it was the greatest empire of the world. It was founded by Babur (aka the tiger). By the time of his death in 1530, the Tiger had established a loose empire around India. During his reign, he had acquired gunpowder and artillery weapons, which allowed him to launch invasions. Babur's grandson, Akbar, (reigned 1556 -1605) was seen as the greatest rule in Indian history. He established an open policy of religion, which proved to be very important for relations between Hindus and Muslims. Akbar created a syncretic religion, which he called the divine faith. This allowed him to focus as emperor of both social and religious groups. The greatest extent of the Mughal dynasty was said to have been under the reign of Aurangzeb (reigned 1659 -1707) who ruled over almost all the subcontinent of India, except for the southern tip. His empire, though, was not without its problems. There were strong tensions between Hindu and Muslims, causing multiple rebellions. Two of their greatest accomplishments were introduced under Shah Jahan, who created the Peacock Throne and the Taj Mahaal.

PORTUGUESE EMPIRE:

The Portuguese monarchy ruled from 1580 -1640. With nothing to lose because of their poor state, they sought to establish a trading post empire. They built more than 50 trading posts between west and east Africa. The Portuguese established many exploration voyages, including the world reknown explorers Ferdinand Magellan and Vasco de Gama. They conquered Ceuta in north Africa and established trading posts in west Africa. They rounded the Cape of Good Hope and ventured into the Indian Ocean in 1488. Vasco da Gama reached India and returned with huge profit. Magellan crossed the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. An important commander was Afonso d'Albuquerque who controlled the trade in the Indian Ocean trade by forcing all merchant ships to purchase passes. If they didn't have one, everything they had would be confiscated. The Portuguese also had powerful ships so they could force people under their will. Brazil was also part of the Portugese empire. Acquired from the Treaty of Tordesillas, they were able to rule, but the king granted power to the nobles. The nobles established sugar plantations that allowed them to prosper.
